Fire Station 21

FIRE:ESCAPE draws inspiration from the symbolic and literal use of fire escapes. As a utilitarian object, the fire escape’s essential function is to provide an exit strategy from buildings in an emergency. However, the fire escape has always provided more. Residents of high-rise or high density buildings often use the fire escape as an outdoor amenity. Used in this way the fire escape becomes a patio or respite where one may enjoy fresh air. Playing off of this dual nature, FIRE:ESCAPE transforms the utilitarian object, in this case a fence, into an art piece capable of providing a place to commune with the outside.
