Cherokee Nation Cultural Center
The Cherokee Nation Anna Mitchell Cultural and Welcome Center is located on Cherokee land in Vinita, OK.
Each section of the Cultural Center is visually divided through the use of differing materials and plants. Panel design by Cherokee artist Bill Glass, Jr.
Pavers represent the Stairway to Heaven pattern found in the creative basket-weaving of the Cherokee Peoples.
The water feature is a vessel and a point of beginning for rain. It is reflective of the sky, the art, the faces of those who look into it. A place to touch and connect to the importance of water. Sculpture by Cherokee artist Demos Glass.
The busy outside world disappears from view as you are enveloped in the native world. The sloping walls represent below, and frame the view above. Windows provide views out to the north, south, east, and west. At the center you will find the present in a pool sited at the high point of the hill.
Cherokee crosses were embedded into the circular concrete formwork. Native plants with cultural and medicinal qualities were used throughout.
Entrance to the Cultural Center.
Patterned inlets reflect the circular vessel form.
